Grandma Grill's Hungarian Pastry

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 beaten egg yolks
  • 1 cup chopped nuts
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 beaten egg whites
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 cup jam - damson plum, sherry, plum, strawberry, raspberry

Directions

Cream butter and sugar. Add egg yolks, vanilla, flour, salt, baking powder.
Mix thoroughly and pat into a greased 8x12 inch pan. Spread with jam (Grandma Grill always used Damson plum). Beat the egg whites adding the 2 tablespoons of sugar and spread over the jam. Sprinkle the nuts on top and bake in a 300 degree oven for 30 minutes.
