Pastitsio
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 2 large onions, finely chopped
- 1/2 pound mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cups spicy tomato sauce
- 2 large cloves garlic, crushed
- 1/2 teaspoon oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon basil
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
- 8 ounces large macaroni
- 1 egg
- 1/2 pound feta cheese
- CUSTARD:
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/4 cup flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon pepper
- 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 beaten eggs
Directions
Brown ground beef. Pour off excess fat and add onions and saute until tender. Stir in mushrooms and cook for 5 minutes. Add spicy Tomato sauce, garlic, oregano, basil, pepper and cinnamon. Lower heat, cover, and simmer for 40 to 50 minutes or until thickened. Cook macaroni, drain and rinse in cold water. Beat egg, then mix into macaroni. Spread half the macaroni in greased 9 x 13 pan. Cover with meat sauce, Top with remaining macaroni, them sprinkle with half the cheese. Bake at 350 degress for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare custard. Melt butter in saucepan, and stir in flour,. Add milk. Cook, stirring until thick and glossy. Add spices, remove from heat, and cool slightly. Whisk a small amount of hot sauce into eggs, then beat egg mixture into remaining sauce. Remove casserole from oven, cover with custard, and sprinkle with remaining cheese. Bake 40 minutes longer, or until a knife inserted comes out clean.
